Specialist services for older people from the black and minority ethnic communities.
Dementia Care Partnership (DCP) recognises that there is very little existing knowledge of dementia or mental health difficulties among the Asian community, and the need to challenge some of the myths and stigma associated with the conditions. In some languages eg Punjabi there is no word to describe dementia and as a result there is very little understanding about the illness or how to care for a person with dementia.
Newcastle City Council also found that there are 588 people aged 65 or over from the black and minority ethnic communities. Their true need for services is not highlighted and current services remain erratic, inaccessible and unresponsive to their needs and diversity.
‘’Black elders may not want services only provided by black people, but they need services which are appropriate to their needs.”
At DCP we recognise this and strive to offer specialist services which are appropriate to their needs and sensitive and specific to their culture.
Our specialist services include:
A home support service to assist with all aspects of personal care tasks to help maintain individuals’ personal skills, abilities and a sense of personal identity. This is carried out by trained support workers with the relevant knowledge and language skills where ever possible.
Day opportunities: This is a new service to be started in the purpose-built Bradbury Centre in the north of the city.
Independent supported living houses - a new service being developed in the outer west of Newcastle.
An overnight short break service in a new purpose-built centre incorporating a restaurant, coffee shop, gym, and with an option to take part in activities of their choice on offer at the day activity centre. This will be provided with trained support workers who have the relevant knowledge and language skills as appropriate.
There is also facility for a family member to stay if required.
