Overnight Short Break Services

Overnight short breaks at Bradbury Centre offer carers a much needed rest and peace of mind as their relatives are offered individualised, sensitive and professional care.

Dementia Care Partnership (DCP) is a carer-led charity set up to meet the needs of people with dementia and other mental health problems.  Our aim is to develop and deliver services for you and your family which are appropriate to your age, needs and culture.

WHAT IS A SHORT BREAK SERVICE?
A short break can include:

    • time off for the carer or the cared for (home support service)
    • day activities incorporating social, leisure, and learning opportunities for a full day
    • overnight short term breaks from one or more days, weekends or weeks

At the Bradbury Centre we can offer you all the above but also as a holiday away from your home, in a safe and friendly environment.

WHO WILL BENEFIT
The short break service is a specialist service for:

    • Younger people with dementia
    • Older people from the black and minority ethnic communities
    • People aged 50-65 with mental health problems who do not settle in any other settings.

OVERNIGHT SHORT BREAKS
Overnight short breaks at Bradbury Centre offer carers a much needed rest and peace of mind as their relatives are offered individualised, sensitive and professional care. They are also provided with an active break in a normal community based centre with a range of social, leisure and learning facilities.  Opportunities to share the care, also enables carers to continue to care for their loved ones at home.

WHY AN OVERNIGHT SHORT BREAK SERVICE?
At present, all overnight short term breaks are provided in residential and nursing
homes or in hospital beds. These are not appropriate or acceptable for younger people with dementia who want to relate to people of their own age and interests.

“Because I was desperate for a break, my husband, aged 52, was sent to a home with older people. He let himself out, and walked all the way home.”

Similarly older people from the BME communities also feel the services are not appropriate or sensitive to their culture or needs and often they do not have staff who can communicate with them in their own language.
Both these groups wanted us to address these weaknesses and provide a service which can be used by the person on their own, or together with their carers.

WHAT WILL OUR OVERNIGHT SHORT BREAK OFFER?
The short break suite is designed to create a family atmosphere and consists of five bedrooms, each having its en-suite facility.  Two of the bedrooms have the facility for someone to stay.  This may be a friend or a family member who can help communicate, which is especially important if the person is from the BME community and experiencing language difficulties.

There is also a comfortable lounge area to socialise with family and other people who use the short break service.

STAFF
Our fully trained team of staff include bi-lingual staff members who will provide a round

“I was desperate for a break and mum was sent to a home where no one could speak her language. She came home depressed wanting to go back to her home in Pakistan.”

-the clock personal service to meet your individual needs.

MEALS
Short break customers can use the restaurant and coffee shop on the ground floor, or have their meals in the privacy of the kitchen/diner in the short break suite. A delicious, mouth watering menu will be available for you to choose from.

ACTIVITIES
Short break customers can also use the gym and take part in the various activities and opportunities offered at the Bradbury Centre.
