At Dementia Care Partnership (DCP) we recognise that quality service can only be provided if the employees receive quality training and opportunities for career development. To this effect the board of trustees and the senior management team see training and development of staff as a key fundamental task in order to achieve the charity’s objectives.
We are proud to have been awarded the Investors In People award which is confirmation of our emphasis on training, from the board of trustees to employees at every level. We continually strive to meet, and indeed exceed, the National Minimum Standards for Domiciliary Care, ensuring that high quality standards of personal care and support are provided to all our clients and that all staff have the necessary skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience in order to meet the needs of the individual clients with whom they work.
All members of staff on joining DCP undertake a two week induction training course. This covers:
- the historical background of the organisation
- its aims and objectives
- the values and philosophy which underpins all aspects of our work
- the policies and procedures that enables us to work within agreed standards adhering to employment and other legal parameters
- the systems and processes that aid us to achieve our objectives
In addition, staff receive training on the following core subjects:
- Moving and assisting
- Health and safety
- Food hygiene
- Fire safety
- First aid
- Protection of vulnerable adults
Existing staff undertake refresher training in all of the above core subjects every two years. In accordance with the requirements of the national minimum care standards, all staff who work for DCP are expected to undertake an NVQ in care. This is a work based qualification. Usually workers will start at level 2 and then move to level 3 and 4. Managers are encouraged to undertake their level 4 NVQ in Management. Administrative staff are encouraged to undertake level 3 NVQ in Administration. We also offer Modern Apprenticeships to anyone under the age of 25 who is employed by DCP.
DCP also offers a range of training to all staff including the following:
- Understanding dementia
- Understanding the needs of carers
- Understanding behaviour that challenges
- Dealing with stress
- Loss and bereavement
- Sexuality and dementia
- Spirituality and dementia
- Personal care including end of life care
- Risk assessment
- Working with younger people with dementia
- Working with people from the black and minority ethnic communities
As well as providing a wide range of training within DCP we also organise training for specific workers to enable them to be better equipped to meet the needs of their individual clients and this includes:
- Downs syndrome and dementia
- Epilepsy
- Diabetes
- Acquired brain injury and dementia
- Huntington’s disease and dementia
- Sensory impairment
- any other topics requested by our staff
Where we do not have the expertise to provide training in-house, we work in partnership with other leading organisations such as the Dementia Services Development Centre, Stirling, and professionals and experts in the health, social services and the voluntary sector. DCP places high importance on training for all members of staff.
All members of staff receive one to one supervision sessions every six weeks – two months. These sessions are seen as a mutual learning forum for the employee and line manager. It is also an important way to assess how the employee is working to the objectives as set out in their job description, discuss any help they may require to do their work better, discuss their own personal development needs with their line manager and complete a Training Needs Analysis form. The Training Needs Analysis form is passed to the Training Manager who endeavours to ensure that those needs are met as soon as possible.
The opportunities for training and staff development are open to all employees and they are actively encouraged to gain the necessary skills, experience and qualifications to enable them to provide the highest quality of care and support to all of our clients.
