Becoming a Trustee

Who are the trustees of DCP?
The Charities Act 1993 (section 97) defines charity trustees as those responsible under the Charity’s Governing Document for controlling the management and administration of the Charity. Our governing document can be accessed on http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk

At DCP, the trustees are referred to as the board of directors.  As the charity was founded by carers and former carers, we ensure at least two thirds of the board consist of carers or former carers.  We believe, because of their personal experiences of people with dementia or other mental health problems, they are best placed to direct the Charity.

At present there are twelve trustees who are:
Roger-Wallis  Bill-Barnes   Una-Thompson Charlotte-Clarke

Mr Bill Barnes (Chair) former insurance and finance consultant
Mr Roger Wallis : architect, former carer
Prof Charlotte Clarke : associate dean of research
Miss Una Thompson : former carer
Mrs Sentokh Bamrah : interpreter, former carer
Mr Bob Burn : former asst area director, social services
   manager, advocacy service
Mr Gerald Roberts : retired architect
Mrs Jannette Smith : carer
Mrs Jan Shortt : resource worker
Mr Mike Worthington, OBE : retired chief probation officer
Dr Andrew Fairbairn : consultant in old age psychiatry
Ms Helen Rowland : accountant

How can I become a trustee of DCP?
Trustees of DCP are usually selected from the Carers Forum or those who have become associated with and show an interest in DCP’s activities. Trustees bring their own skills to the board – an example would be an architect who could help with the design of a housing development.

If you ….

    • are able to commit the time
    • have the skills and knowledge to offer
    • the interest to read and comment on relevant paper work

…. then you have the qualities we are looking for.

If you are interested in becoming a trustee, then you will be requested to attend a minimum of three board meetings for you to determine whether it is what you want to do.

Our board meetings take place bi-monthly and we encourage trustees to be active members However, we appreciate that trustees have other commitments and it may not be possible to attend all meetings.  There are also working groups such as the finance working group (held monthly), human resource and risk management (six monthly) that trustees can attend if they are interested or have the relevant skills and experience.

All trustees (directors of the board) undergo induction when they join the charity.
A skill audit is also carried out and relevant training is given.
