Specialist services for younger people

It is normally assumed that dementia only affects older people.  Dementia affecting people aged 65 or under is often referred to as ‘early onset dementia’ or ‘younger people with dementia’. This refers to a progressive degeneration of the brain occurring before the age of 65.  This age guide is widely used by the health and social services to categorise people, for the purpose of diagnosis, assessment and identifying their service needs.

Although dementia is more common among older people, the symptoms experienced are similar, irrespective of age.  Everyone's experience of dementia is unique though and life history and how they cope with their illness depends on the support and understanding they receive from their family, social network, employment, financial circumstances and their own individual personality.

For a younger person who may be in employment, with a young family, looking forward to the future with high hopes and expectations and so much to live for, a diagnosis of dementia can be devastating.

At Dementia Care Partnership (DCP) we recognise this and strive to offer specialist services to meet their multitude of needs.

Our specialist services include:

a home support service to assist with all aspects of personal care tasks to help maintain individuals’ personal skills, abilities and a sense of personal identity.

Day opportunities where a younger person with dementia can take part in social, leisure, and learning activities which meets their individual interests and aspirations.

Independent supported living houses as an alternative to residential care, when living at home or with their families no longer becomes possible.

An overnight short break service in a new purpose-built centre incorporating a restaurant, coffee shop, a gym, and with an option to take part in activities of their choice offered at the day activity centre.

Evening clubs to be set up in October 2005 to support and enable people to continue with their evening social activities and lifestyle that they have enjoyed.
