Volunteer for Us

Volunteering at Dementia Care is a great way to help people with dementia and for you to develop new skills.

"I’ve volunteered at the Newcastle Day Service for just over a year now. Why did I join? I used to work in a library and met a lot of people with differing degrees of memory loss. I thought that volunteering would give me a better insight into how I could help these people. The Day Service is a safe, happy and welcoming place where the staff are knowledgeable and caring. They have always made me feel at home and part of the family. I’m really pleased I volunteered."
Val Clark, Volunteer (June 2017)

If you are interested in helping people with dementia, there are opportunities to volunteer in our Independent Supported Living service or within our Newcastle or Hexham Day Centres. These include:

  • helping people with dementia enjoy a particular hobby or interest.
  • helping people with dementia to reminisce about their past experiences.
  • helping with a walking group or other group outings.
  • helping with specific activities e.g. arts and crafts, music or gardening.

There is no need for you to feel “I wouldn’t know where to start” because all volunteers will be fully trained. We will be on hand to offer advice and support and will try to match your skills with the right person or activity.

I’d like to help but don’t have much time

You can volunteer for a day a week (or more), or just for a few hours, whatever suits you. You will be surprised just how much satisfaction and enjoyment can be gained.

How to Volunteer

If any of this strikes a chord with you and you would like to find out more, please e-mail

or telephone Jane Thackray or Georgina Ram for a chat on 0191 217 1323.

Corporate volunteering

We regularly welcome teams of volunteers from companies and other organisations. As well as explaining what we do and providing general dementia awareness, we can offer team-building tasks around our Newcastle centre. Recent teams of volunteers have worked in our garden, around our car park and have painted lots of fences! If you run a team or are responsible for your organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities, please contact:
